Olympic sprinter-turned-bobsleigher Craig Pickering will share insights he gained competing at the highest level when he presents a free public lecture at Southern Cross University next week.

The lecture, ‘An Olympian’s perspective on the role of sport science and psychology in athlete performance’ on Friday September 27, is free and open to all in the community at the Coffs Harbour campus.

Pickering is one of the few athletes in the world who has been selected in both summer (2008) and winter (2014) Olympics. As an accomplished sprinter, he medalled at World and European Championships.

These days Pickering conducts research into the science of elite sport performance, and he is the Pathways Manager at Athletics Australia.

“I’ll be sharing insights into how sport science and psychology makes a difference at the highest level, which should be relevant to anyone interested in sport,” said Pickering.

Dr Christian Swann, Co-Course Coordinator for the new Bachelor of Exercise Science and Psychological Science combined degree, said he was thrilled to welcome Craig Pickering to Coffs Harbour.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to hear about the roles of sport science and psychology in elite athletes. Craig has unique experience as an Olympian, a researcher, and as a sport scientist now working with some of Australia’s best athletes. He’s one of very few people worldwide who has such a background, so it’s really exciting that he’ll be visiting Coffs Harbour.

“Craig’s talk will be of interest to anyone who is interested in sport, thinking about studying sport science and/or psychology, or considering a career in this area. It will also be interesting to athletes, coaches, and anyone already working in sport.”

This is the third event in the 2019 public guest lecture series celebrating the new Bachelor of Exercise Science and Psychological Science combined degree at Southern Cross University. Previous guests have been Dr Simon Rosenbaum and Associate Professor Richard Keegan.

“Events like this also celebrate Southern Cross University’s ranking as the best place to study psychology in Australia,” said Dr Swann.

“It will be a great opportunity for members of the community to visit our campus and speak with some of our staff and students about our degrees.”
