Southern Cross University’s Melbourne graduation ceremony was a proud moment for more than 200 students, who gathered at the historic Melbourne Town Hall on Friday 12 September to celebrate their achievements.

Among the graduates were Lily Trewin, who completed a Bachelor of Business in Hotel Management and international student Thanidu Vithanage, who earned a Master of Business in Global Hotel Leadership. Both graduates exemplify the global and local impact of The Hotel School, which will be at the heart of the University's expanded Melbourne campus next year.

Lily Trewin took to the stage at the Melbourne ceremony to deliver a speech on behalf of her fellow graduates.

“I wanted to thank our family and friends and dedicated staff and lecturers at Southern Cross University for all their support through our challenges and success during our studies,” she said.

The highlights of Lily’s study experience have been the friendship and industry connections she has made and the confidence and independence she has gained.

“The connections I have made have helped me in my career already by securing my internship and my current job at the Sofitel Melbourne on Collins.”

“I have been able to be involved in leadership roles, helping host events on and off campus, organising the Hotel School Gala, school expos and many more experiences. I have grown so much from all experiences and learned lessons for life.”

For international student Thanidu Vithanage, Melbourne’s energy, culture, and opportunities made relocating from Sri Lanka an easy decision.

“Southern Cross University offered the exact degree I was looking for, and they had a very strong connection with the hospitality and tourism industry,” he said.

“The program was well structured, and the two components I was looking for were global exposure and leadership skills. Studying this program was like a dream come true.”

While studying, Thanidu secured a position with Pullman Hotels and Resorts, gaining invaluable experience through the Hotel School’s strong industry connections.

“Now that I have graduated, I am working to advance my career in hospitality leadership and explore ways I can contribute towards positive social impact. My ultimate goal is to open a luxury boutique hotel chain in Sri Lanka and Australia.”

The University was honoured to welcome Georgina Downer, Chief Executive Officer at the Robert Menzies Institute, who delivered the occasional address. Her speech inspired graduates to embrace leadership, innovation, and lifelong learning as they embark on the next chapter of their careers.

Southern Cross congratulates Former Deputy Chancellor, Murray d’Almeida who received the University’s Honorary Doctorate at the ceremony for his outstanding service to the University, industry and community.
