A place to belong

A place to belong: Create the life you want to live at SCU

A career at Southern Cross University isn’t just about work - it’s about finding a place that fits your lifestyle, values and aspirations. For many of our people, that means trading city commutes for coastal drives, concrete skylines for lush hinterlands and impersonal workplaces for a true sense of community. Read on to hear how some of our people have found a place as unique as they are at SCU.

An unexpected home

Professor Renaud Joannes-Boyau is an internationally renowned Geochemist and Geochronologist, specialising in dating ancient fossils to unlock the secrets of human evolution. But when he arrived in Lismore from Bordeaux in the southwest of France, he wasn’t sure if he’d made the right decision.

“We rented a truck, packed up our things and drove into Lismore late in the afternoon. As we passed through Broadwater and Coraki, it felt like there was absolutely nothing but cane fields. My ex-partner kept checking the rearview mirror, thinking I was going to turn around!”

But after two years in the region, something changed for Professor Renaud.

“I love it here. The lifestyle allows me to have an amazing job while still spending time with my family, taking my dogs to the beach and living in a place where values like care and community actually mean something. At SCU, we strive for excellence, but it only matters if we have a healthy environment in which to do it. That’s what makes this place special.”

Where ocean meets opportunity

Born and raised in Iluka, New South Wales, Dr Mandy Beasley has always been drawn to the ocean. As a Marine Scientist, her role at SCU’s National Marine Science Centre in Coffs Harbour allows her to stay connected to the water while supporting world-class research.

“Coffs Harbour truly has the best of both worlds. We have the ocean right here, with an incredible marine park just offshore, offering amazing biodiversity in a subtropical climate. It’s never too hot or too cold. And with great surfing beaches, snorkelling and free diving, there’s something for everyone.

“But we’re also close to the hills and mountains. In just 20 minutes, I can go kayaking or bass fishing in freshwater, or drive a little further and see snow in winter at Ebor. Having Southern Cross University based here in Coffs Harbour is special. Being so close to both the mountains and the ocean is invaluable for my work-life balance.”

Associate Professor Georgina Dimopoulos

Taking a leap of faith

For years, Dr Georgina Dimopoulos built her academic career in Melbourne while working at a large metro university. But when a Senior Lecturer role at SCU’s Gold Coast campus caught her eye, she felt compelled to take a chance.

“Moving north with my family felt like a big risk, but we took the leap in January 2023. When I flew up for my interview, I immediately felt a friendly connection. The Vice Chancellor was on the panel, and I genuinely enjoyed the experience. It felt like a place where people have a sense of humour and are truly welcoming.

“Now, I live just a five-minute drive from the beach or a half-hour jog away. The sense of community here is so different from Melbourne; people take the time to stop and chat. My children have made wonderful friends, and we spend so much more time outdoors - whether it’s at the beach, in the parks or exploring the green spaces. It’s a beautiful way to live.

Science with a view

For Cooper Schouten, a Researcher and Educator specialising in sustainable beekeeping, SCU’s Lismore campus provides the perfect backdrop for his work.

“When Southern Cross University first took over the Lismore campus, there wasn’t a single tree on site. Now, it’s so lush and green. The people are just as wonderful. It truly feels like being part of a community.”

When he reflects on his daily commute to and from work, it’s something most people can only dream of.

“When I wake up, I’m five minutes away from the beach, where kangaroos, eagles and dolphins are part of the morning view. Then I ride my motorbike to work along a quiet farm road - no traffic lights, just rolling hills. The sunsets on the ride home are incredible.

“At work, I open my window to birds chirping, and I cross paths with colleagues not just in meetings but at free diving training. It’s a peaceful, laid-back place to be, and I think that’s something a lot of people are craving these days.”
