Welcome to the Faculty of Business, Law and Arts (FBLA) monthly Seminar Series.
Seminar overview: Surfing Economics
This seminar will be delivered by Dr Ana Manero.
Surfing is Australia’s second most popular water sport, contributing to $2.7 billion a year to the economy and supporting physical, mental and social wellbeing. Despite these benefits, only a few of Australia's 1,230 surf breaks are legally protected or formally recognised in coastal planning. This seminar will share recent research quantifying surfing’s economic and wellbeing benefits in Australia (here and here). It will also examine key case studies, including the Gold Coast and Aotearoa New Zealand, where formal recognition of surfing resources already exists. Our discussion will explore how sustainable management of surfing ecosystems aligns with the broader global agenda for a ‘blue economy’ and enhanced coastal resilience.
