Law – Inherent Requirements

Academic Knowledge and Learning Outcomes

Students must acquire and demonstrate the academic content and knowledge required to pass all core and option units, as specified in unit learning outcomes.

Justification of inherent requirement:

• The LLB curriculum is governed by the Legal Profession Uniform Admission Rules 2015 (NSW), requiring a minimum of three years of full-time study and coverage of the prescribed areas of knowledge. Demonstration of this knowledge is necessary to meet course learning outcomes and professional accreditation requirements.

Reasonable adjustments may be made to the method by which students demonstrate their knowledge. Adjustments must not compromise the learning outcomes, academic integrity requirements, or the student’s ability to demonstrate their own achievement of the required knowledge.

Includes a range of assessment tasks such as invigilated exams, written assignments, oral presentations, and practical applications. Completion of a written examination under exam conditions and oral defences, with appropriate adjustments that do not compromise the integrity of the assessment.

Intellectual and Cognitive Skills

Students must be able to read, analyse, understand, and remember complex and evolving legal and interdisciplinary concepts, and apply that knowledge in a timely and effective manner, with appropriate adjustments that do not compromise the process.

Students must be able to work independently and take responsibility for the timely completion of learning activities and assessments.

Students must be able to engage with emotionally challenging materials and demonstrate professional conduct, behavioural stability and a capacity to manage responsibilities in demanding contexts.

Delivery of quality legal advice and advocacy is based on comprehensive knowledge that must be sourced, understood, and applied. Law students will be exposed to emotionally challenging and intellectually demanding situations.

Adjustments must ensure that a clear demonstration of knowledge and cognitive skills is not compromised or impeded.

Ability to conceptualise and use appropriate knowledge in response to academic assessment items. Coping with own emotions and behaviour effectively when dealing with challenging content.

Ethical Behaviour

Demonstrate knowledge of, and compliance with, ethical standards, codes of conduct, and professional boundaries in all contexts.

Compliance with codes, guidelines, and policies facilitates safe, competent interactions and relationships, ensuring the well-being of all involved.

Adjustments must not compromise codes of conduct or result in unethical behaviour.

Complying with academic and non-academic misconduct policies. Demonstrating appropriate behaviour with confidential information.

Professional Conduct and Behavioural Resilience

Demonstrate behavioural resilience and professional conduct to effectively engage appropriately in academic and professional legal environments. This includes the capacity to regulate emotions, respond to constructive feedback and manage time and stress.

Legal studies and practice may involve exposure to emotionally challenging and intellectually demanding situations and, at times, accounts of human suffering and injustice. Students are expected to demonstrate the behavioural resilience and emotional regulation necessary to manage these experiences in a professional, ethical and objective manner. This includes the ability to engage with distressing content, navigate pressure, and maintain respectful conduct in academic and professional settings.

Adjustments must support stable, effective and professional behaviour in academic, clinical and professional settings.

Being perceptive, receptive and professional in responding appropriately to constructive feedback. Coping with own emotions and behaviour effectively when dealing with individuals in the clinical and placement setting.

Legal Compliance

Demonstrate knowledge and compliance with Australian and relevant international law, professional rules, codes of conduct, and scope of legal practice, procedures and ethics.

Knowledge, understanding, and compliance with legislative and regulatory requirements are necessary for legal practice and procedures and to manage risk.

Adjustments must be consistent with legislation, rules, codes of practice, and regulatory requirements.

Complying with relevant child protection and safety legislation. Complying with rules of evidence.

Communication Skills – Verbal, non-verbal and written

Communicate effectively and efficiently in English, both orally and in writing, to convey knowledge, provide advice, and interact with clients, peers, and professionals. Recognise, interpret, and respond appropriately to verbal and nonverbal cues, and use diverse media, technology, and e-learning resources, making adjustments, without compromising the integrity of the process.

Effective communication is essential for legal practice, advocacy, and collaboration. Timely, accurate, and clear communication—whether oral, written, or nonverbal—is critical to client safety, professional relationships, and academic success.

Reasonable adjustments may be made to the mode of communication, including assistive technologies, interpreters, captioning or alternative formats, provided the student can communicate effectively, accurately, and appropriately to the context. Adjustments must enable students to participate fully in academic and professional settings.

Participating in tutorial, simulation, clinical, and placement discussions. Responding appropriately to advice that is being sought in the clinical and placement environment.

Recognising and responding appropriately in classroom situations. Recognising and responding appropriately to cues in the clinical and placement environment.

Constructing an essay to academic standards. Drafting legal documents to appropriate legal and professional standards.

Technology and Information Literacy

Locate, use, and communicate with others using diverse media, technology, and e-learning resources.

Technology is integral to contemporary legal practice and education, enabling effective communication and access to resources.

Adjustments must ensure students can access and use required technology and media without compromising learning outcomes. This includes the use of assistive technologies such as screen readers, voice recognition software, captioning tools and other adaptive systems, where appropriate. These tools are supported and encouraged to enable equitable participation in all academic and professional learning activities.

Using online legal databases, participating in e-learning activities, and submitting assignments electronically.

Interpersonal Engagement

Actively engage in collaborative learning environments, participate in respectful communication with others, and develop professional relationships within diverse groups. This includes the capacity to contribute to group discussions, respond appropriately in social and academic contexts, and uphold ethical and professional standards in interaction.

Collaborative learning and respectful interaction are essential for professional development and effective legal practice.

Reasonable adjustments may support participation in collaborative activities through communication aids, assistive technologies, facilitated participation, asynchronous collaboration tools, or other communication supports that enable the student to meet the required learning outcomes.

The focus is on effective participation, not the mode or style of interaction. Students are not required to conform to neurotypical of extroverted norms, but must demonstrate the capacity to engage respectfully, ethically and effectively with others in academic and professional contexts.

Contributing to group discussions, working collaboratively on projects, engaging in respectful debate.

Numeracy

Interpret and correctly apply data, measurements, and numerical criteria relevant to legal practice (e.g., calculating damages, compensation, trust monies).

Competent application of numeracy skills is essential in legal practice to ensure quality advice and assistance to clients.

Adjustments must demonstrate a capacity to appropriately interpret and apply concepts and processes in a timely, accurate, and effective manner. This may include the use of calculators, formular sheets, or extended time for numeracy-based tasks.

Calculating entitlements to damages, compensation, interest, or other monetary payments in litigation.

Listening and Comprehension Skills

Competent listening and comprehension skills are essential to provide professional and effective delivery of legal advice to the client.

The ability to acquire information in a variety of circumstances and to accurately convey messages is necessary to demonstrate the capacity to deliver effective legal advice and assistance to clients.

Adjustments to address listening and comprehension issues must demonstrate a capacity to effectively acquire, comprehend, apply and communicate accurate information in a timely manner. This includes the use of assistive technologies such as screen readers, voice recognition software, captioning tools and other adaptive systems, where appropriate.
