Who said science and music don’t mix? The successful experiment that was the first ever Science Tent at Splendour in the Grass in 2017 returns this week to connect festivalgoers with science in new and unexpected ways.

Some of Southern Cross University’s exciting and best scientists and communicators are back to team up with colleagues from across the country for #scienceinthegrass in the Science Tent at Splendour, July 20 to 22, to bring an explosion of rocket fuel for the brain and a program jam-packed full of stuff you didn’t even know you wanted to know about how science influences our everyday life!

Don’t miss these presentations from the Southern Cross University team:

Can we save Nemo from a warming ocean? Friday 11am and Sunday 10am: with PhD candidate Sophie Pryor

The hidden beauty of sand Sunday 11.30am: with PhD candidate Laura Stoltenberg

Fermented Splendour! Friday 2.15pm: with PhD candidate Laura Stoltenberg

Smartfin - Surfing for Science Friday 1.45pm and Saturday 12.15pmn: with Dr Renaud Joannes-Boyau

Chemistry! Colour, crystals and climaxes Friday 11.30am and Sunday 4.15pm: with Associate Professor Amanda Reichelt-Brushett and Dr Don Brushett

What makes frogs croak? Friday 12.15pm and Sunday 11am: with Dr David Newell

Fly and bring me data: the drone-age in coastal science Sunday 10.30am: with Dr Deb Stokes and PhD candidate Andrew Colefax

Head across to the Global Village to lose yourself in the Silent Disco being solar-powered by SCU Sunflower, the University's solar-powered audio system.

“Southern Cross University brings science to Splendour to showcase our fabulous research including smart technology for surfers, secret treasures hidden within sand, the impact of global warming on fish life, and how we can use drones to monitor the coast,” said Professor Susan Nancarrow, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research).

“Come and join us for some fun, intellectual stimulation and learn something about the local region.”

If your passion for science is ignited after dropping in at #scienceinthegrass, then Southern Cross University can help you explore new horizons with our degrees in environmental and marine sciences and engineering. Southern Cross has campuses at Lismore, Coffs Harbour, Gold Coast and online. Festivalgoers can talk to our friendly staff at the SCU Kombi, next to the Science Tent, to find out more.

While you’re at the Kombi, dress-up at our science-inspired photobooth and automatically upload the images to your social media accounts.
