Southern Cross University hosts Live Build with LEGO Masters

The live Lego build was held at Southern Cross University's Gold Coast campus, in partnership with Study Gold Coast. Each team of four students used their creativity and design skills to create a 3D masterpiece, with each of the Lego builds depicting an aspect of the Gold Coast's landscape and cultural diversity.

Each team was assigned a pre-built Lego water dragon, and was tasked with building the landscape and habitat for it to be placed in. The creations ranged from dragons appearing in Gold Coast waterholes, beaches and hinterland landscapes and even one with a dragon climbing the Q1.

The event is the first of six major Lego build events to be held at six major education partners of Study Gold Coast to showcase the city as a leading study destination for both face-to-face and online study.

Andrew Tuppen, from Pacific Pines, is a music teacher at Emmanuel College on the Gold Coast who, along with Brisbane-based Damian Hinds, found fame when they became the runner-up team on Channel Nine’s 2020 Lego Masters show hosted by Hamish Blake. The show was an AACTA Award-winner and ratings smash hit.

The five student teams at Southern Cross University represented the four University faculties, plus one dedicated international student team with students from across the four faculties. Following the build event these Lego creations will be on show at iconic locations on the Gold Coast.

The student team from the Faculty of Science and Engineering won the event with their Lego creation depicting the Gold Coast coastline, complete with the beach, waterways, trees and the built environment with cranes and high-rises, while also incorporating Southern Cross University’s colours of green, blue and yellow.

Team member Max den Exter is studying his Bachelor of Engineering with Honours and said the team enjoyed building with Lego again after many years.

“We brought in some inspiration from each member’s degree – including Engineering, Marine Science, Environmental Science and Science in general – and it culminated in this big display.”
