AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship awarded to Southern Cross University student
Southern Cross University Bachelor of Science student Luke Austin is among a select group of next generation rural leaders to receive a prestigious Horizon Scholarship.
Following an extensive judging process focused on the applicants’ commitment to agriculture, leadership potential and career aspirations, 20 students from around the country were awarded a 2022 AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship.
Luke Austin, a Coffs Coast local who is studying the Science degree at the University’s National Marine Science Centre, said he was thrilled to receive the scholarship.
“I’m so excited to be awarded an AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship, not only will it provide me the opportunity to connect with industry professionals, but I will also gain valuable hands-on experience in Northern Australia,” said Luke.
“I’m really looking forward to meeting the other students involved in the program, learning more about the challenges and opportunities across the agricultural sector and how I can be a future leader in Australia’s rural industries and communities.”
Luke also thanked the Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia (CRCNA), the organisation supporting his Horizon journey.
The AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship Program provides its scholars with a $10,000 bursary over two years, thanks to ongoing support from industry sponsors, as well as plenty of opportunities to develop their leadership skills and expand their networks.
On top of the bursary, they will also attend an annual four-day professional development workshop and complete two weeks of industry placement each year, all of which is covered by the support of their sponsor.
The Horizon Scholarship program is an initiative supported by seven Research and Development Corporations (RDCs), along with the Cooperative Research Centre for Developing Northern Australia and FMC Australia.
John Harvey, AgriFutures Australia Managing Director, thanked the Horizon sponsors and acknowledge their significant contribution to the program, particularly in offering students valuable exposure to the agricultural sector.
“The AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship Program would not be possible without our sponsors. The diversity of industry sponsors reflects the desire across the board to focus on the next generation of leaders who will build prosperous and sustainable rural industries of the future,” said Mr Harvey.
Luke and the other AgriFutures Horizon Scholarship Program students will attend a four-day workshop in July focused on leadership and personal development. The workshop will feature special guest speakers, industry experts, field trips and also provide the opportunity to network, meet sponsors and discuss innovations and challenges in the agricultural sector.
