Work Integrated Learning at Southern Cross University

At Southern Cross University, we’re embedding work integrated learning (WIL) directly into your course – because your future starts now.

Through WIL you’ll gain real-world experience in professional settings that align with your studies, from education campuses to corporate, clinical, and community environments. Whether it’s a placement, internship, or fieldwork, WIL is your opportunity to apply your knowledge, build your confidence, and connect with industry mentors.

It’s more than a requirement – it’s a launchpad for your career.

  • Work Integrated Learning may take the form of opportunities for employment experience in the corporate workplace, commerce and industry, government or non-government agencies and social enterprises, creative organisations, or diverse professional sectors.
  • Most often, WIL is a compulsory part of your course of study – that is, you must complete the WIL component of your course to meet the requirements for the award of your degree.

  • Depending on your course, WIL may be described as an internship, ‘professional experience’, work-in-industry, a clinical or other professional placement, practice or practicums, field work, or community-engaged learning.
  • The numbers of hours required in WIL differ from course to course, and across years within a course.
  • These differences are usually related to the professional requirements for a graduate of any university to commence employment within a professional sector – for example, accountancy, allied health, education, engineering, law, or veterinary science.

For all WIL experience, you must:

  • meet all study requirements set out as preparatory or pre-requisites for your WIL
  • meet all non-academic requirements as conditions for your WIL including sector checks and clearances, and immunisations or vaccinations, which may differ depending on your campus or WIL location in Australia or overseas
  • comply with all instructions or directions given by non-University supervising staff members at your place of WIL, including workplace attendance hours, which may differ from your usual study hours, and dress code, which may include wearing a uniform or other workplace-specific attire, and workplace ID, as directed
  • be prepared to travel your place of WIL, subject to your own arrangements and expense
  • fulfil all attendance and assessment requirements associated with your WIL to pass the unit or units of study
  • contact the Inclusion team to discuss potential adjustments at least six (6) weeks prior to the start of your WIL if you are registered with the University for disability support or are experiencing a medical condition that may impact your ability to undertake WIL.
