National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine

Southern Cross University will establish the National Centre for Naturopathic Medicine in 2019 at our Lismore Campus with a $10 million donation by philanthropist Mr Marcus Blackmore AM.

The personal gift from Mr Blackmore and his wife Caroline is the largest single donation received by the University.

With the generous donation we aim to establish a world-class centre of excellence in innovative education and research in naturopathic medicine.

Southern Cross University is one of Australia’s most dynamic young universities with a long history in the development of specialised courses and research that engages with industry and community. Lismore campus is a hub for plant science and naturopathic medicine.

A Nursing and Naturopathy building opened in 1996 at the Lismore campus, followed by a Naturopathy Clinic in 1998 as part of the Natural and Complementary Medicine programs. This was the first of its kind to be established by an Australian university.

Lismore campus is also home to the University’s renowned Southern Cross Plant Science research centre, a team of more than 40 scientists and PhD students led by globally recognised experts in plant breeding, utilisation and genetics.

The Analytical Research Laboratory is a commercial facility within Southern Cross Plant Science accredited by the Therapeutic Goods Administration that specialises in the chemical analysis of plant products and other biological substances.

The University delivers a range of degrees in allied health disciplines and complementary therapies such as osteopathy from the Lismore campus. In 2018, the Centre for Organics Research – a joint initiative between Southern Cross University and NSW Department of Primary Industries – was launched in Lismore to provide evidence-based scientific and multidisciplinary research on organics production and supply chains.

Southern Cross University aims to be at the forefront of solutions to the growing health care needs of Australia where evidence-based natural medicine will play an increasingly active role.

"We aim to establish an internationally-recognised centre of excellence in naturopathic medicine education and associated research.

We are proud to be the first Australian university to offer higher education qualifications in Naturopathy.

This will enable Southern Cross to provide distinctive career pathways and ongoing development for the profession, as well as increased research capability."
