Unit description
Introduces the subject of fluid mechanics as it applies to water in civil engineering applications. Students will learn basic principles of fluid mechanics including fluid properties, effects of viscosity, static and dynamic pressures, energy and momentum principles, the principle of continuity, and energy loss in pipes and open channels.
Unit content
Properties of fluids
Behaviour of static fluids
The conservation laws in moving fluids
Effects of viscosity and friction
Fundamental behaviour of flow in pipes
Fundamental behaviour of flow in open channels
Learning outcomes
Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.
On completion of this unit, students should be able to: | |
---|---|
1 | define the basic properties of fluids relevant to engineering analysis |
2 | calculate the forces acting in a static fluid |
3 | describe and apply the laws of continuity, conservation of energy and conservation of momentum to perform simple analyses of fluid flows in pipes and open channels. |
On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
- define the basic properties of fluids relevant to engineering analysis
- calculate the forces acting in a static fluid
- describe and apply the laws of continuity, conservation of energy and conservation of momentum to perform simple analyses of fluid flows in pipes and open channels.
