Unit description

Introduces students to computer-aided design (CAD) and other technologies for engineering design applications. Students will become familiar with basic 2D and 3D CAD processes and use CAD to produce detailed drawings, sections and models for use in engineering design. Students will also explore new and emerging engineering design technologies, including 3D printing.

Module 3: Producing basic drawings

Module 4: Using CAD to produce detailed plans and sections

Module 5: Creating and managing 3D models

Module 6: Creating presentation drawings from 3D models

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1describe current and emerging tools and methods to manage the engineering design process
2employ industry-standard computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce a basic drawing to communicate an engineering design using established design requirements
3use CAD to produce detailed plans, sections and models and perform design calculations relevant to your engineering specialisation
4create a simple model using 3D CAD and 3D printing

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. describe current and emerging tools and methods to manage the engineering design process
  2. employ industry-standard computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce a basic drawing to communicate an engineering design using established design requirements
  3. use CAD to produce detailed plans, sections and models and perform design calculations relevant to your engineering specialisation
  4. create a simple model using 3D CAD and 3D printing
