Unit description

Introduces principle based frameworks for culturally safe, appropriate and ethical language in the classroom, as well as cultural revitalisation programs within classrooms.

Topic 1: Principles and Protocols for Aboriginal Culture and Language in Schools
Topic 2: Respect and Cultural Safety
Topic 3: Yarning and Education
Topic 4: Yarning and Aboriginal Language
Topic 5: Respect Responsibility and Sustainable Revitalisation

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1describe the vital first steps in teaching Aboriginal language in Schools,
2demonstrate an understanding of Aboriginal cultural principles and culturally safe systems underpinning Aboriginal language in schools
3promote cultural principles to support respectful language learning by students and teachers.
