Unit description

Promotes the continuing development and translation of theory in practice. Enables the midwifery student to plan, implement and evaluate safe midwifery care for the woman requiring complex care during pregnancy in conjunction with the Australian College of Midwives [ACM] Consultation and Referral Guidelines, Policy, Procedure and Guidelines.

Unit content

  1. Evidence-based care of the woman with complex pregnancy
  2. Endocrine complications in pregnancy
  3. Infections impacting pregnancy
  4. Pathophysiology, detection and management of complications in pregnancy
  5. Bleeding and blood disorders
  6. Medical and other conditions impacting pregnancy

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1demonstrate knowledge of the relevant professional and ethical frameworks that underpin midwifery practice when working with women experiencing a complex pregnancy
2discuss the pathophysiology, detection, and management, including midwifery care, for women experiencing infections and endocrine disorders during pregnancy
3discuss the pathophysiology, detection and management, including midwifery care, for women experiencing bleeding disorders and medical conditions during pregnancy
4demonstrate knowledge of diagnostic testing and screening results when assessing maternal and fetal wellbeing

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
