Unit description

Provides students with the opportunity to critically analyse contemporary models and frameworks for midwifery leadership and an introduction to midwifery mentor/mentee relationships; concepts, issues and challenges and their impact on midwifery practice will be examined. The midwife as educator will also be explored.

  1. The midwife as educator within Australian clinical setting
  2. Mentor and mentee roles within the midwifery context
  3. Collegial, courageous, and constructive communication skills
  4. Midwives supporting midwives
  5. The midwife as leader within the Australian healthcare context
  6. Strategies for self-care

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1critically analyse and compare theoretical principles and practices of leadership within midwifery, including effective communication skills, that foster effective health care teams
2critically analyse adult learning principles and practices that underpin the midwife as educator
3explore and explain current theory and evidence-informed practice to midwifery mentor–mentee relationships
4discuss the midwife’s role in creating a healthy workplace environment and building professional resilience in self and others

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
