Unit description

Prepares students for speech pathology practice when working with children and adults presenting with fluency disorders. Students acquire knowledge and skills pertinent to assessment, diagnosis and intervention relevant for fluency disorders.

Unit content

Stuttering theory and the impact of stuttering in relation to the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health
Assessment, diagnosis and measurement of stuttering quantitatively and qualitatively
Intervention for fluency disorders through application of evidence-based practice for preschool aged populations
Intervention for fluency disorders through application of evidence-based practice for school aged and adolescent populations
Intervention for fluency disorders through application of evidence-based practice for adult populations
Contemporary practice for fluency disorders

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

formulate evidence-based speech pathology assessment plans for child and adult clients presenting with fluency disorders

use scientifically supported methods to identify, measure and rate stuttering behaviours and identify the presence of a fluency disorder

analyse speech pathology assessment data to formulate a diagnosis for clients presenting with a fluency disorder

demonstrate evidence-based speech pathology intervention for child and adult clients presenting with fluency disorders
