For units with practicals and other learning activities that directly relate to developing AVBC day one competencies that are required for veterinary accreditation, attendance is required. These will be identified within each unit and attendance requirements clearly communicated to students.

Unit description

Clinical integration 2 consolidates key concepts and skills in the first pre-clinical phase of year 2 units as part of programmatic assessment (reiterating and building upon the foundational skills developed in year 1 in VMED1001). Intermediate systematic structured clinical examination incorporates the introduction of a SOAP (Subjective, objective, assessment, plan) framework, and an awareness of clinical consultation processes and safety aspects of managing patients of different life stages and demeanours. Students are introduced to triage and basic first aid, would management and bandaging techniques and practice more involved clinical procedures such as venipuncture, clinical pathology tests and use of veterinary equipment such as monitoring machines, fluid pumps and anaesthetic machines. Clinical cases supplement the procedural and skills-based learning in this unit. Together, these elements prepare students for participating in extramural pre-clinical WIL through programmatic assessment. This unit includes practical assessments preparations, skills consolidation and programmatic assessment for Year 2 PRECLINICAL LEARNER STAGE.

Unit content

Intermediate clinical examination and handling techniques, sample collection (venipuncture) and administration of oral and parental medicants (Spiral and vertical integration of VMED1001, horizontal integration of VBIO1004 and VBIO2001).
Triage, first aid and wound management (spiral and vertical integration of VMED1001, horizontal and vertical integration of VBIO1006 and VBIO2001).
Bandaging, splints, casts and poultices (vertical integration of VBIO1001, VMED1001 and horizontal integration of VBIO2001).
Basic clinical pathology diagnostics and interpretation of test results (horizontal integration of VETS2002, VBIO1003 and VBIO1006).
Introduction to neonatal management and geriatrics (linkage with VETS2011)
Introduction to veterinary equipment and monitoring systems (vertical integration with VMED1001, VBIO1003).

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate proficiency in fundamental clinical procedures building upon skills learnt in VBIO1003, including venipuncture, injection techniques, wound management, and catheter placement, while adhering to aseptic principles and patient safety protocols

interpret basic diagnostic test results, including haematology, urinalysis, and microscopy, correlating findings with clinical signs to support preliminary diagnoses

communicate effectively with peers and veterinary professionals to document clinical observations, explain procedural steps, and justify clinical decisions in a structured and professional manner

demonstrate competency in a range of common surgical skills with supervision/assistance while engaging in reflective practice
