Unit description

Provides a critical understanding of policy and practice in prevention, child protection and out of home care. Issues of child abuse and neglect, including domestic violence, are analysed in relation to institutional initiatives in Australia. The role of critical analysis and critical self-reflection is framed against legal and policy considerations.

Issues of protection: what are they and why do we need to know about them
Contemporary constructions of child abuse, family and domestic violence
Assessment approaches in child protection
The prevention/child protection/out of home care continuum
Therapeutic and culturally strong approaches to care
Managing ethical and organisational issues, managing self

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

analyse the impacts and contributing factors to child maltreatment

analyse the influence and impact of policy and practice on child maltreatment

analyse how issues of power, ethics and values impact and influence the delivery of services within the context of protection

use evidence based, reflective practice across the child protection and care continuum
