Learn more about being a Mentor“The SCU Mates program embodies what I believe universities should be about—students supporting students. Watching mentees transition from uncertain first-day students to confident members of the SCU community makes every conversation worthwhile.”
Mentees typically join the Mates program to meet fellow students who can offer non-academic support throughout their study journey.
It is a great way to make new friends who share similar hobbies and interests, and to share the highs and lows of student life with someone who is studying alongside you.
Mentees match with one Mentor at a time, and are responsible for checking in throughout the term or asking for support when needed.
It only takes four steps...
4. Connect over your shared hobbies and interests
Mentors are well-settled students who volunteer their time to connect with and offer non-academic support to peers who share their hobbies and interests.
They match with up to 5 Mentees at a time and are responsible for maintaining a connection with them throughout the duration of the term, and offering support when needed.
Mentors are included in the SCU Vollies student volunteering program and can receive rewards for their time and commitment to student life at SCU.

Your Mentor is not a tutor and cannot provide you with academic advice. However, they can refer you to services and help you find resources that may be helpful.
Mentors can also share study tips that worked for them and help you settle into your study routine.
The Mentor-Mentee connection can be ended by either person for any reason.
The Volunteer Program Officer is here to support both Mentors and Mentees. If any issues arise, don't hesitate to email scumates@scu.edu.au for guidance and support.
