Unit description

Builds on Advanced Secondary Curriculum and Pedagogy I to extend students’ understanding of secondary teaching and learning for Year 11-12 (Stage 6) syllabi. The unit encourages critical engagement with the role, value, requirements and current issues of the Stage 6 syllabus. Students will design lessons, assessments, resources and activities related to units from their subject syllabus. These designs will be informed by a range of teaching and learning priorities including critical, creative and connected inquiry-based learning, differentiation, disability and inclusion, Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander cultures, digital technologies, literacy and numeracy.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1demonstrate a broad and critical understanding of the knowledge base of Stage 6 syllabi, including recent theory and research in the relevant disciplines
2develop engaging units of work and lesson plans and resources related to selected theoretical and practical content of the Stage 6 syllabi, demonstrating familiarity with the required syllabus outcomes, objectives, key competencies, knowledge, skills, and understandings; source and assess the appropriateness of digital and non-digital resources that link to informed and effective teaching and learning across the Stage 6 syllabi
3apply current pedagogical theory, including the NSW DET Quality Teaching Framework, to develop effective teaching and learning strategies that encourage students with a diversity of learning needs, styles and cultural backgrounds to engage effectively with the Stage 6 syllabus, as appropriate to the needs and expectations of the profession
4assess the literacy and numeracy demands of the Stage 6 syllabus and develop effective teaching and learning activities to integrate literacy and numeracy strategies; identify and critically examine assessment and reporting procedures and strategies in the context of the Preliminary and HSC standards-referenced assessment framework

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
