Unit description

This unit focuses on the underlying concepts of science essential for success in health studies. Students explore the nature of science as it relates to health and apply analytical and quantitative skills to a range of health-related contexts. Students learn to use scientific language to communicate processes and concepts. Learning skills specific for the health sciences are developed.

Unit content

  1. The nature of science and the scientific method
  2. Introduction to key concepts in chemistry
  3. Introduction to organ systems, cells, homeostasis, and the nervous system
  4. Introduction to the cardiovascular and respiratory systems 
  5. Introduction to the musculoskeletal system and movement
  6. Introduction to evidence in practice

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1Demonstrate a sound understanding of the nature of science, and the ability to communicate using scientific language as it relates to health science.
2Demonstrate an understanding of foundational scientific concepts that are essential for successful tertiary study in health.
3Apply analytical and quantitative skills in a range of health related contexts.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
