Unit description

Examines the conflicts between Indigenous healing practices and the mainstream health industry. The concepts of Indigenous wellbeing, spiritual integrity and community cohesion are explored, and the impact of colonisation on the health status of Indigenous peoples is analysed from historic and contemporary points of view. Aims to provide students with understanding and awareness of the socio-economic issues and cultural sensitivities required for delivery of effective and appropriate care by health workers and allied personnel.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
1discuss key concepts of health and wellbeing as determined by Aboriginal people
2identify key stages of the colonisation process and its relationship to the contemporary health status of Australian Indigenous people
3analyse the relationship between socioeconomic factors and the contemporary health status of Australian Indigenous people
4explain how primary health care, health promotion and health professionals enhances the wellbeing of Indigenous people

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
