Unit description

This unit examines how culture is transformed by algorithmic practices and artificial intelligence. Students will examine digital cultural practices like social media, automated decision-making and generative artificial intelligence. They will consider the relationships between algorithmic practices, cultural differences and hierarchies of power.

Learning outcomes

Reflect on the relationship between algorithms/artificial intelligence and their cultural, political and technological contexts

Examine interactions between algorithmic practices/artificial intelligence and existing social inequalities and cultural hierarchies

Critically analyse an everyday cultural site by applying relevant cultural and critical theories.
