Unit description

This is the second of two units marking the ongoing transition from counselling student to professional counsellor. Students are required to spend a minimum of 100 hours internship at a counselling agency. In addition to placement experiences, students attend a combination of individual and group supervision sessions with experienced practitioners allocated by the University. This unit highlights the importance of regular supervision in counselling practice.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

integrate counselling skills in an appropriate sequence and compliance with ethical, legal and professional requirements pertaining to counselling practice

demonstrate sophisticated application of evidence-based counselling theory and accompanying counselling skills, contextualised to specific clinical presentations

demonstrate increased competence in the assessment of client issues, producing clear, coherent and evidence-based case conceptualisations and client case conceptualisations

display increased cultural competence, evidenced by awareness of and sensitivity to a range of multicultural factors
