DSGN1003 - Design and Technology Principles and Processes

Unit description

This unit introduces foundational Digital Technologies concepts, including emerging tools such as Generative AI, within the Technologies Learning Area for primary and secondary teaching contexts. Students engage in project-based and problem-based learning to explore curriculum-aligned principles and processes and develop introductory digital solutions to authentic problems.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

interpret, sort and visualise data to define and decompose real-world problems, considering functional, economic, environmental, social, technical and usability constraints

design user experience concepts for digital systems by generating and evaluating alternative designs that meet needs, consider innovation and address future risks and sustainability factors

design simple algorithms represented diagrammatically and in English, and trace algorithms to predict output and identify errors

plan and manage projects that implement and modify programs with user interfaces involving branching, iteration and functions in a general-purpose programming language, including appropriate use of Generative AI tools
