Unit Snapshot

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply mechanical design principles to an industrial-scale design using a systems approach, while considering related contextual factors

design and assess mechanical systems using appropriate methods and techniques to generate innovative solutions as a team.

deliver clear, structured communication of design project outcomes to relevant stakeholders

analyse the results of the mechanical design project to identify mechanical safety risks and conduct a self-assessment for ongoing learning and improve.

design and justify the selection of shafts, joint mechanisms (permanent and non-permanent), springs, and bearings to develop reliable and efficient mechanical systems.

design and optimise mechanical power transmission systems (including gear systems, clutches, brakes, couplings, belts, and chains), applying advanced modelling and performance evaluation to ensure reliable, efficient, and safe torque and motion transfer within integrated mechanical assemblies.
