Unit description

In this unit, students will develop knowledge and skills to uphold the rights of children across diverse contexts. Students will examine a range of rights- and agency-based approaches, including international frameworks and theories of childhoods and participation, to assist them in developing their own justification for supporting a rights-based approach in early childhood education and care contexts. Students will learn how to apply this approach when supporting children’s relationships, learning, play and behaviours.

Module 3: Relationships and guiding behaviours.

Module 4: Children’s rights and agency across contexts.

Module 5: Children’s agency in transition.

Learning outcomes

explain the key ideas of children’s rights to a variety of audiences

apply a rights-based approach to interpreting and guiding children’s play, learning and behaviour

apply ethical considerations and professional obligations when advocating for and implementing children’s rights in diverse contexts

design and justify strategies that promote children’s participation, voice, and decision-making in learning environments
