Unit description

In this unit, students will deepen their understanding of the importance of storytelling, apply pedagogical strategies to support children to engage with stories, and develop their own practices as a storyteller to and with children. Students will develop understanding of how to plan a vibrant storytelling session that engages children, and fosters their imagination and play. Reflection upon storytelling and its impact upon children’s learning will be applied.

Module 3: Storytelling through play.

Module 4: First Nations stories and storytelling.

Module 5: Stories as a curriculum prompt.

Module 6: Digital storytelling.

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

explain the role of stories in traditional and contemporary teaching and learning

identify and apply strategies for storytelling to engage children

apply knowledge of pedagogies for teaching using children’s literature and other texts to develop children’s language and storytelling skills

apply knowledge of established early childhood texts to engage a range of Early Childhood Education curriculum areas
