Recommended that students undertake Foundations for Religious Education as the first unit in the Graduate Certificate in Religious Education.

Unit description

Explores aspects of the religious education curriculum and considers a range of pedagogical approaches to teaching. Consideration will be given to significant religious leaders and sacred texts with a focus on Catholic education.

The world of religions
The emergence of devotion and the distinctions between believing in and learning about religion
Key beliefs about religions within a coherent framework for teaching
Responding to questions and controversies about religious leaders in curriculum design
Teaching about religious leaders in religious education in a variety of contexts

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. These outcomes are aligned with the graduate attributes. The unit learning outcomes and graduate attributes are also the basis of evaluating prior learning.

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

examine and evaluate sacred texts, writings, and other sources to gain a clear understanding of key aspects of religious teachings.

explore and conceptually map the key beliefs about religious leaders, and integrate them into a coherent framework for teaching in the religious education classroom.

examine the distinctions between believing in religious leaders and learning about religious leaders, and incorporate these insights into curriculum design and teaching practices.

integrate theological frameworks into learning plans, resources and best practice in religious education pedagogy.
