Unit description

This unit aims to develop student competency in the clinical examination of common animal species required for entry into a clinical teaching environment in order to safely participate in clinical extramural experiences. Students will gain confidence in their practical animal handling and physical examination skills and will be introduced to basic concepts in diagnostic imaging, first aid and surgery.

Module 3. Clinical skills 1: Companion animal

Module 4. Clinical skills 1: Equine

Module 5. Clinical skills 1: Ruminant

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

demonstrate proficiency in performing safe and complete clinical examinations for a range of animal species seen in veterinary practice, under supervision, in practical and case-based contexts

apply knowledge of general first aid principles to effectively assess and provide appropriate initial care to veterinary patients in emergency situations

apply the fundamental general principles of diagnostic imaging in veterinary medicine and recognize their significance in obtaining diagnostic information and guiding patient care

demonstrate competency in psychomotor skills for basic surgical procedures in veterinary patients in a team environment while engaging in reflective practice.
