Unit description

This unit aims to provide the core competencies in equine medicine and surgery. Students will develop the necessary knowledge and skills to be competent in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of the common equine medical and surgical conditions in veterinary practice. Students will also participate in community engaged learning to support knowledge and skill development.

Unit content

Module 1. Common diseases of the cardiovascular, respiratory and lymphatic systems

Module 2. Common diseases of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems

Module 3. Nutrition and common diseases of the endocrine system

Module 4. Common diseases of the gastrointestinal system

Module 5. Common diseases of the skin, ophthalmic, and immune systems

Module 6. Common diseases of the renal, urogenital and reproductive systems

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

discuss clinical presentations, diagnostic approaches and treatment options for common diseases in equine patients while engaging in reflective practice

apply knowledge of diagnostic testing principles to design and apply effective diagnostic testing plans for equine patients with medical conditions

design therapeutic plans for equine patients using a logical clinical reasoning framework through practical experiences and case-based learning

demonstrate effective teamwork and communication skills while participating in a veterinary clinical team in an equine setting.
