Unit description

This unit aims to build the core competencies in companion animal surgery. Students will develop the necessary knowledge and skills to be competent in the diagnosis, treatment and management of companion animal surgical conditions in veterinary practice. Students will also participate in community engaged learning to support knowledge and skill development.

Unit content

Module 1. Common surgical diseases of the musculoskeletal and nervous systems

Module 2. Common surgical diseases of the skin, ophthalmic, and immune systems

Module 3. Common surgical diseases of the renal, urogenital and reproductive systems

Module 4. Common surgical diseases of the gastrointestinal system

Module 5. Common surgical diseases of the cardiovascular, respiratory and lymphatic systems

Module 6. Common surgical diseases of the endocrine and other miscellaneous body systems

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

apply knowledge of common surgical conditions in companion animal practice to describe and discuss their clinical presentations, diagnostic approaches, and treatment options while engaging in reflective practice

formulate a logical framework for clinical reasoning in the diagnostic and therapeutic process for companion animal surgery through practical experiences and case-based learning

apply knowledge of common surgical procedures and treatment planning principles to effectively perform surgeries on models, simulations and patients

demonstrate effective teamwork and communication skills while participating in a veterinary clinical team in a companion animal surgical setting
