OCCU5002 - Contemporary Occupational Therapy Practice

Unit description

This unit introduces students to occupational therapy practice with adults and older adults, focusing on enabling occupational participation across acute care, rehabilitation, and community contexts. Students will develop the capability to integrate contemporary occupational therapy knowledge, including theoretical frameworks, research evidence, ethics and professional reasoning, to address participation challenges associated with neurological, musculoskeletal, and psychosocial conditions. The unit explores strategies for supporting ageing in place, maintaining wellness, and providing care in residential and palliative settings. Students will learn to apply and interpret assessments and develop skills to design and justify interventions that promote occupational participation and well-being for adults and older adults in diverse practice contexts.

Learning outcomes

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

analyse common conditions experienced by adults and older adults to determine their impact on occupational participation

select, apply, and interpret appropriate standardised and non-standardised assessments and outcome measures for adult and aged care practice

design and justify occupational therapy interventions for adults and older adults by integrating professional theory, research evidence, ethics and professional reasoning

develop occupational therapy practice which considers the perspectives of clients, families and other stakeholders to ensure safe, ethical, and culturally responsive practice
