Unit description

This unit provides students with their first opportunity to apply occupational therapy knowledge and skills in a simulated professional practice environment. Delivered on campus, students will engage in 150 hours of structured learning with simulated clients, focusing on adults as a key client group in occupational therapy practice. Through case-based scenarios, students will apply the occupational therapy process, develop emerging professional reasoning, and demonstrate safe, ethical, and culturally responsive practice. Students will be supervised by an occupational therapist who will provide feedback on competency development. Students will be required to actively seek and respond to feedback to enhance their knowledge and skill development. The unit supports the development of communication, documentation, and foundational technical skills, including safe manual handling, home modifications and work rehabilitation within a supportive learning environment. It prepares students for subsequent real-world placements by fostering confidence, reflective practice, and integration of theory into practice.

Unit content

150 hours of practice education will be undertaken throughout this unit. Essential practical skills will be learnt and demonstrated throughout the unit including safe manual handling skills. These skills will be learnt on campus and will focus on occupational therapy with adults. Students will be assessed on clinical/professional reasoning, various practice skills, communication skills, documentation skills, professional behaviours and competencies.
