SPCH2002 - Neurology for Speech Pathology

Unit description

Prepares students for speech pathology assessment and differential diagnosis of adults with acquired communication disorder. Students will apply principles of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health to promote holistic and client-centred assessment. Students will be provided with opportunities to acquire, practise and demonstrate intermediate-level speech pathology skills that underpin clinical practice.

Unit content

Introduction to acquired communication disorders in adults
Assessment of dysarthria and differential diagnosis between other communication disabilities
Assessment of aphasia 1: models, frameworks, approaches and their application
Assessment of aphasia 2: forming a complete picture
Assessment of apraxia of speech and differential diagnosis between other communication disabilities
Assessment of cognitive communication disorders and differential diagnosis between other communication disabilities

Learning outcomes

Unit Learning Outcomes express learning achievement in terms of what a student should know, understand and be able to do on completion of a unit. On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

develop and justify a speech pathology assessment plan for use with adults with acquired motor speech, language and/or cognitive communication disorders, with reference to the individual's cultural, linguistic and social context

analyse, synthesise and interpret speech pathology assessment data relating to adults with acquired motor speech, language and/or cognitive communication disorders, with reference to the individual's cultural, linguistic and social context

report on speech pathology assessment data relating to adults with acquired motor speech, language and/or cognitive communication impairments, to individuals, carers and other appropriate stakeholders

apply and integrate theoretical knowledge and case-based assessment data to differentially diagnose communication disorders and their subtypes and plan further assessment
