SCU Student Legal Service

Free, confidential legal advice for all enrolled SCU students.

Students can book a consultation with a qualified lawyer in person at the Gold Coast, Lismore and Coffs Harbour campuses or by phone/online via Microsoft Teams. This service is provided through a partnership with LEXSA and Atlas Lawyers and funded by the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).

What can I get help with?

The team at Atlas Lawyers can provide advice on a range of matters such as:

  • Employment rights and contracts
  • Tenancy and Landlord issues
  • Qld Traffic and minor criminal offences
  • Family issues & Domestic violence
  • Immigration and visa queries
  • Consumer and financial matters
  • Commercial, Business & Contracts
  • General legal questions

You can access up to three 20-minute consultations per matter. Written advice will be provided following consultations.

Student Legal Service limitations

  • Specialised legal service, ongoing assistance or representation are not provided by the service.
  • The SCU Student Legal Service is distinct from and does not assist with SCU’S internal university matters. This includes student complaints and conduct processes, academic decisions and appeals. You can however access Student Advocacy Support regarding those matters.

How to book a consultation

  • Appointments are made using the Atlas Lawyers portal.
  • On your first visit click “start now” at bottom of page and create an account with your SCU email. 
  • You can also download the Atlas Lawyers Portal mobile App for iOS and Android if you are on a mobile device. (Follow pop-up instructions)
  • Appointment availability will be shown in the portal.
  • Campus appointments are available every third Thursday at each campus, 11am-5pm.  Ideally, in-person campus appointments should be scheduled a day prior.
  • Online appointments are available Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 2pm-5pm.
