Unit description
Considers plantation forests in a worldwide context as native forests become increasingly protected. Plantations provide environmental protection, carbon sequestration and wood for human use. This course uses a general teaching approach to introduce the science behind the technologies involved in sustainable management of plantations of both native and exotic species.
Unit content
- Policies and ethos surrounding the approach today to plantation forestry
- Choice of species and suitability of sites for plantation establishment
- Nursery practices, site cultivation, planting and post-planting tending
- Nutritional management of plantations
- Thinning and pruning practice
- Pests and diseases
- Breeding strategies
- Mixed-species plantations
