Biography
Steve Purcell is a Professor of Marine Science and Management within the School of Environment, Science and Engineering through the National Marine Science Centre, and also a member of the Reefs and Oceans Research Cluster, Southern Cross University. He is responsible for developing and leading research projects in fisheries ecology. Steve has led projects on habitats of threatened and endemic fishes, and small-scale fisheries of Pacific Islands, including sea cucumbers, gastropods and giant clams.
Research
Professor Purcell's research specialises in aquaculture, fisheries management, fisheries ecology and trade of sea cucumbers in the Indo-Pacific, in partnership with agencies including ACIAR, FAO, and the SPC. His research spans a range of ecological and biological fields, published in several books, book chapters and over 70 scientific research articles.

Professor Purcell's teaching areas are Fisheries management, Marine ecology, Experimental design and analysis in ecology, Coastal habitats and ecological processes, Experiments and population surveys in fisheries, and Coral reef ecology.
