Rhonda has three main areas in which she believes she can most effectively contribute to the success of SCU Students.
Firstly Rhonda is an experienced and long standing SCU Student Counsellor. Previously based on the Lismore campus. Having started working for SCU Counsellling Team in 2010, while in Sydney.
To underpin this work Rhonda gained Post Graduate qualifications in Social Science, Counselling & Psychology and later having worked both here in Australia and overseas in Health & Welfare.
To borader her horizons, too, Rhonda also worked as a Para-legal as part of the Legal Team for an international media business based in Sydney.
In this role as Company Secretary & Corporate Para-legal, Rhonda's background (in economics & political science) was mainly used in Legal & Corporate Compliance and Risk Management in Media.
Rhonda has enjoyed a broad academic background with all qualifications from the University of Sydney.
Graduate qualifications in Arts Psychology/ Counselling and Social Work.Post graduate degrees in Arts, Social Science. Political Economy & Psychology, Linguistics. Majors in Anthropology, International Education, Political Science (economics) and Medico-Legal.
Also gained Cert 1V in working/ teaching English as a second language(TESOL.)
Rhonda enjoys working with Indigenous students & IASS staff . Students who are struggling with social and emotional challenges such as depression, anxiety or lacking time management skills and focus challenging their studies.
Understanding the academic demands & requirements made on students, Rhonda is able to effectively support and motivate these students.
Sessions are sometimes didactic in nature, supportive, motitivational, providing psycho-social resources. Tutoring sessions are mostly sprinkled with compassion and gentle humour.
Rhonda uses a "student centred approach" a strategy of active listening, humour, building trust, empathising and addressing the students "self-defined" needs, concerns, fears and life ambitions.
Rhonda is passionate about working with SCU Indigenous at both Undergraduate and Post -graduate students.
An ITAS Tutor (GNIBI/ IASS) over a decade, Rhonda is qualified to tutor Indigenous students in various faculties & studies including eg. in Arts subjects, Education, Post Graduate Social Work / Social Science & Welfare Studies (MSW) & Psychology and under-graduate Legal Studies.
