Biography

Dr. Barbara Adonteng-Kissi is a distinguished social work educator and researcher currently working with the Social Work Discipline in the Faculty of Health at Southern Cross University. She holds a PhD from Griffith University, Australia.

Research

Her research interests and scholarly contributions are notably influenced by her Ghanaian cultural background. Her work primarily focuses on the lived experiences of older individuals and their family carers managing chronic life-limiting illnesses and providing informal care in rural Ghana. A key aspect of her research involves investigating methods to strengthen social structures, aiming to enhance the quality of life for both older people and their family carers in the context of chronic illness management. In addition to her work focused on Ghana, Dr. Adonteng-Kissi's recent research projects have explored the Australian aged care sector, specifically investigating the enablers and barriers to increasing social work placements in residential aged care facilities.

Teaching

As an educator, Dr. Barbara Adonteng-Kissi’s teaching experience stems from social work theories, Ageing and aged care in Australian, groupwork and human service organisations. She is dedicated to social work field education, actively engaging students in direct practice experiences, skills development, group work, and community development.
