Biography

Dr Nguyen Van Tri Tin is an Adjunct Researcher in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Southern Cross University. He also serves as Biodiversity Conservation Lead at WWF–Viet Nam, where he works to advance joint research, training, and policy dialogue on biodiversity and sustainable development. His work focuses primarily on Vietnam’s Central Annamite Landscape—one of Southeast Asia’s most critical regions for forest and wildlife conservation.

With over 25 years of experience in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Indonesia, and Australia, Dr Tin has led major conservation and development programs with organisations such as WWF, USAID, KfW, UNDP, CIFOR, and ICRAF.

Research

Dr Tin’s research integrates ecological science with community-based conservation and environmental governance. His key areas include:

  • Biodiversity conservation and wildlife protection – protected area management, ecological connectivity, species monitoring, wildlife rescue and rewilding, and GIS/SMART (Spatial Monitoring and Report Tool) -based monitoring.
  • Forest development and management – forest restoration, seedling and nursery systems, community forest management, and carbon/REDD+ monitoring.
  • Sustainable livelihoods and conservation innovation – including work on non-timber forest products, community based ecotourism and apiculture as a nature-based livelihood solution.

His interdisciplinary work bridges ecological, social, and policy dimensions to address biodiversity loss, climate resilience, and sustainable landscape development.

Teaching

Dr Tin contributes to teaching, seminars, and guest lectures at Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry in Vietnam and SCU in biodiversity conservation, environmental policy, and sustainable livelihoods. He also mentors students and collaborates with government agencies, NGOs, and universities to strengthen community engagement and conservation leadership across the region.

Other

Through his adjunct role at SCU, Dr Tin supports research partnerships, regional collaboration, and Australia’s engagement in environmental sustainability initiatives. He continues to publish, advise, and build cross-sector collaborations that support conservation outcomes for both people and nature.
