Vinh Bui

Dr Vinh Bui is an enthusiastic researcher and educator with over 10 years’ experience in Australian higher education. He has strong academic leadership skills and is driven by a lifelong commitment to advancing and sharing knowledge.

Education

Dr Vinh Bui has a background in both computer science and electrical engineering. He is a certified Cisco instructor and is currently taking the postgraduate certificate in tertiary teaching and assessments.

Experience

Before joining academia in 2005, Dr Vinh Bui had worked in the IT industry as a network engineer and then a software developer for more than 10 years. He has a rich experience in real-time embedded systems software development, which requires a deep understanding of systems hardware, programming techniques and algorithm complexity. After joining academia, he has taken various research and teaching positions at the UNSW, Victoria University, CQU and then SCU. He has developed, taught, and coordinated several undergraduate and postgraduate IT programs and over 30 subjects in the area of computer science and information technology, including computational thinking, fundamentals of programming, computer networking, cybersecurity, web development and programming the Internet of Things. He is actively supervising PhD and Masters students.

Research

Dr Vinh Bui is currently researching in the area of applied computing, focusing on applications of generative AI, machine learning, nature-inspired optimization algorithms, and big data analytics in areas such as healthcare, tourism and waste management. He has a special interest in synthetic data and synthetic environments for training machine learning algorithms. Dr. Bui has published over 30 peer-reviewed articles in the above areas and helped to secure over 10 million dollars of research funding.

Community engagement

Dr Vinh Bui is an active participant in many community engagement activities such as Quick2VR, AI in Healthcare Symposium, and other events organised by the Australian Computer Society (ACS), Study Gold Coast, GC-Hub and Queensland AI-Hub.
