Biography

Rania Shibl is a Professor and Associate Dean (Education) in the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Her work sits at the intersection of technology, data, and real-world problem solving, with particular interests in digital health, data linkage, artificial intelligence, and education.

Rania has worked across a range of research projects, including managing complex longitudinal studies involving linked datasets. Her industry connections and background continues to inform her approach to both teaching and research, with a strong focus on practical impact and collaboration across disciplines.

In her role as Associate Dean (Education), she supports learning and teaching across the faculty, including curriculum development, assessment design, and initiatives that strengthen connections between university programs and industry. She is passionate about creating educational environments that empower both students and staff to thrive in a rapidly evolving digital world.

Research

Rania’s research focuses on applied computing, particularly in areas related to digital health, data analytics, and intelligent systems. One area of her work explores the use of sensor technologies and machine learning to support ageing in place. Through her collaborative work with health professionals in the development of a health smart home platform, her research examines how data from everyday activities can provide insights that may assist older adults to live independently for longer. She has also contributed to research in cybersecurity and secure data exchange in Internet of Things (IoT) environments, as well as work related to data quality and data linkage in health research.

Teaching

Rania is passionate about designing learning experiences that prepare students for the realities of modern technology careers. She teaches and leads curriculum development in a number of areas with the technology discipline. Her teaching philosophy centres on authentic learning, where students apply knowledge to realistic scenarios and develop both technical skills and professional judgement. She has led initiatives to embed industry certifications, real-world projects, and work-integrated learning opportunities into technology programs. Rania is committed to supporting students from diverse backgrounds to succeed in technology fields and enjoys mentoring students as they develop their confidence and professional identity.

Other

Rania is actively involved in academic leadership, mentoring, and collaborative research initiatives. She works closely with colleagues to support innovation in learning and teaching, particularly in response to emerging technologies such as generative AI and their impact on higher education. She is also engaged in interdisciplinary research networks and industry partnerships that aim to translate research into practical solutions for communities and organisations.
